Florida State names ex-Notre Dame QB Golson starting quarterback
Florida State put an end to its quarterback competition on Monday as head coach Jimbo Fisher announced that Everett Golson will be the Seminoles starting quarterback.
Golson, a senior graduate transfer from Notre Dame, beat out Sean Maguire for the job and Fisher said that he has no plans on changing his mind any time soon.
“I’m not going to short-leash anybody,” Fisher told the Orlando Sentinel. “When I played, I did not want to look over my shoulder.”
Fisher said that Golson made big strides in learning the offense and he feels comfortable with him.
“His comfort level of how we practice, how we do things and the demand that we put on our quarterbacks and the expectations we put on them,” Fisher told the Orlando Sentinel. “…I’ve seen him, boy, just grow and grow and grow.
“It makes me comfortable. …The comfort level does come because every call you make in ball, it could be a guard, a tackle, a tight end, a receiver, a running back, you’re usually putting stress on it somewhere on your football team, asking guys to really step up. If you have to do that constantly with your quarterback, it’s a very tough game to call. With Sean I don’t feel that way and with Everett now, with the knowledge he has and being consistent, I don’t feel that way. That allows me to be more free with how we want to do things.”
Florida State fans will get to see Golson in action this Saturday, when the Seminoles host Texas State in their season opener.
