Jack Griffin kicked a 22-yard field goal in the first overtime and as Florida International beat Troy 23-20 on Tuesday night.
Kedrick Rhodes rushed 30 times for 172 yards and Wesley Carrol was 20 of 37 for 286 yards and two touchdowns to lead FIU.
FIU (5-3, 2-2 Sun Belt) won only its second game ever against Troy (2-5, 1-3). Four turnovers hurt the Panthers' chances of taking control of the game after holding a 10-point lead late in the third quarter.
Tony Davis returned a fumble 30 yards for a touchdown that capped the Trojans' 13-0 run that gave them a 20-17 lead with 52 seconds left in the third quarter.
Griffin's 20-yard field goal with 3:31 left tied the game at 20.
FIU outgained Troy 522-299 in total yards and controlled time of possession, 36:39-23:21. However, the Panthers turned the ball over three times and trailed until two third-quarter touchdowns by Carroll gave them the lead.
Carroll connected with Wayne Times on a 76-yard touchdown pass play that gave the Panthers a 10-7 lead with 10:42 remaining. On a third-and-21, he hit a wide-open Jacob Younger for a 43-yard touchdown pass that gave the Panthers a 17-7 lead with 6:31 left in the third quarter.
Shawn Southward's 3-yard touchdown cut FIU's lead to 17-13. He finished with 52 yards rushing on eight carries.
