Jonathan Conner nearly made Elon school history, returning an interception 99 yards for a touchdown to help Jason Swepson earn his first career victory as coach in a 42-10 rout of Concord on Saturday night.

Conner came up one yard short of the school record of 100 yards, set by Roosevelt Brooks against Mars Hill in 1991.

After losing their season opener at Vanderbilt 45-14 last week, the Phoenix (1-1) jumped on Concord (0-2) early and made Swepson's first victory an easy one.

Thomas Wilson completed 22 of 27 passes for 201 yards. His three first-half touchdown passes enabled Elon to take a 28-7 lead. In the second half, the Phoenix found some different ways to score.
