Defense leads William & Mary to 17-7 win over JMU

Jared Velasquez had a 90-yard interception return for a touchdown as the William & Mary defense forced three turnovers and blocked a field goal attempt in a 17-7 win over James Madison on Saturday.

Trailing 7-3 midway through the third quarter, William & Mary (5-3, 2-2 Colonial) blocked a 31-yard field goal attempt by Cameron Starke on fourth-and-1. The Tribe then drove down the field and scored on a 28-yard touchdown pass from Brent Caprio to Tre McBride, giving William & Mary a 10-7 lead. McBride had 84 yards receiving on 10 receptions.

James Madison (5-3, 2-2) had the ball on the William & Mary 31-yard line midway through the fourth when Velasquez picked off a pass by Michael Birdsong for the interception return for a score.

It was the fourth time this season William & Mary has held its opponent to seven points or fewer.
