PULLMAN, Wash., Oct. 11 -- Washington State University issued the following news release:
SATURDAY'S GAME: The Washington State University football team (1-5, 0-3) looks for its first conference win of the season as it hosts No. 17 Arizona (4-1, 1-1) at Martin Stadium as part of Dads Weekend, Saturday (Oct. 16). Kickoff between the Cougars and Wildcats is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
VERSUS TO TELEVISE WSU-ARIZONA GAME: Versus will televise the Washington State-Arizona game (Oct. 16), it was announced by the Pac-10 Conference. Gametime is set for 4:30 p.m. from Martin Stadium. Ron Thulin, Glenn Parker and Lewis Johnson will call the game.
WASHINGTON STATE vs. ARIZONA - THE SERIES: Arizona holds a 24-13 advantage in the all-time series. The Wildcats earned a 48-7 victory last season in Tucson as Arizona rushed for nearly 300 yards and also scored on a punt and kickoff return. The Cougars are 4-9 when playing the Wildcats in Pullman. Arizona has captured the last four games in the series after the Cougars had taken the previous four.
WILSON AMONG FRESHMEN ELITE: Wide receiver Marquess Wilson has made a strong case to be considered one of the top freshmen in the nation. Wilson, who leads the Cougars in receiving yards (85.8 ypg) and is second in receptions (4.83 rpg), leads all freshmen nationally in both categories. Wilson ranks 22nd among all FBS receivers in yards per game and is one of only two freshmen to crack the Top 100. He is 58th in receptions, with the next closest freshman tied for 77th.
KARSTETTER PICKS UP PACE IN CONFERENCE: Junior wide receiver Jared Karstetter has been the prime target for quarterback Jeff Tuel since Pac-10 play began three games ago. In that span Karstetter is averaging 7.7 catches and 88.3 yards per game, with two total touchdowns. Last week against Oregon he registered 10 catches for 106 yards, both career highs. For the season he is averaging 5.5 catches and 60.2 yards per game.
WSU ASSISTING VETERANS: WSU Athletics is partnering with the Veteran Tickets Foundation to honor United States Armed Forces veterans and active duty soldiers for WSU's Nov. 6 Armed Forces Day game against California at Martin Stadium. WSU Athletics is offering the general public a special price of $10 for end zone tickets and $20 for sideline tickets to purchase and donate to the organization. Veteran Tickets Foundation will distribute the tickets to U.S. Armed Forces veterans and active duty soldiers in the area. WSU Athletics is donating 100 tickets to jump start the campaign.
FOX COLLEGE SPORTS TO TELEVISE STANFORD GAME: Fox College Sports has announced it will televise the WSU-Stanford game (Oct. 23). Gametime is set for 2 p.m.
STARTING STALWART: Since WSU's 2007 season-opener against Wisconsin, Micah Hannam has started every game the Cougars have played. The redshirt senior has started 43-straight games, all at right tackle. The streak marks the longest by a Cougar offensive lineman since Mike Utley started 42 in a row from 1985-88. Hannam holds the longest starting streak in the conference.
FRESHMAN PHENOM: Wide receiver Marquess Wilson registered his third game of more than 100 receiving yards two weeks ago at UCLA (118 yards). He is just the second freshman wide receiver in school history to post multiple 100-yard games in a single season as Phillip Bobo did it three times in 1990. Wilson is proving that he can get down field as he already has six receptions of 40-plus yards through the first six games of the season, more than any Cougar had in all of 2009.
MIZELL MAKES MOST OF FIRST START: True freshman linebacker C.J. Mizell took full advantage of his first start, registering a game-high 12 tackles last week against Oregon. The 12 tackles, nine solo, were a WSU season-high and Mizell added a forced fumble.
PASSING GAME SHOWING SIGNS: The Cougar passing attack has thrown for more than 200 yards in each of its first six games and currently ranks 5th in the Pac-10 in passing offense at 252.0 yards per game. Over the past two years the offense had thrown for more than 200 yards a combined seven times.
THREE STRAIGHT FOR FIRST TIME SINCE 2006: During the middle stages of the WSU-UCLA game, the Cougars scored touchdowns on three straight possessions (last of first half and first two of second). It marked the first time that has happened against a Pac-10 opponent since Oregon, Oct. 21, 2006. WSU also scored TD's on three straight possessions against Portland State (9/20/08) and Idaho (9/15/07).
COUGS AGAINST RANKED TEAMS SINCE 2000: Since 2000 WSU is 9-32 against ranked teams and 6-5 when WSU was also ranked. This week's opponent, Arizona, is the third ranked team the Cougars have faced in 2010, USC and Oregon being the other two.
