LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) Nebraska has hired Arizona cornerbacks coach Donte Williams as a defensive assistant.

Cornhuskers coach Mike Riley announced Monday that Williams would fill the coaching vacancy created Nov. 27 when special teams coordinator Bruce Read was fired.

The Nebraska athletic department said in a statement that Williams is expected to coach cornerbacks and have involvement in pass defense coordination. Brian Stewart would shift his focus from cornerbacks to safeties. Riley said he probably will divide special teams duties among several assistants.

Riley said the 34-year-old Williams will be a ''dynamic addition'' as a recruiter. Williams will join the staff immediately and work with the 24th-ranked Huskers as they prepare for the Music City Bowl against Tennessee on Dec. 30.
