Jeff Mathews threw for 285 yards and three touchdowns as Cornell overcame an early deficit to rout Bucknell 45-13 in its non-conference season opener at home Saturday.

The Ivy League's Big Red (1-0) trailed 10-0 in the first quarter, but roared back in the second quarter as Mathews threw touchdown passes to Chris Lenz and Lucas Shapiro to take a 17-13 lead.

Cornell pulled ahead in the third quarter on Mathews' 14-yard strike to Luke Hagy.

Tre' Minor and Jarrod Watson-Lewis each returned fumbles for a touchdown in the third to fuel the rout.

Shapiro finished with 113 yards receiving on five catches.

CJ Williams ran for 148 yards on 30 carries for Bucknell (1-1, Patriot League).

Brandon Wesley went 7-for-16 with 118 yards and an interception.

The Cornell victory was the first for David Archer, 30, the youngest head coach in Division I Football.
