Community service award-win for PK Fry hits close to home

Published Dec. 3, 2015 7:47 p.m. ET

Place-kicker Elliott Fry has been a true weapon this year for South Carolina's struggling offense.

Connecting on 71.4% of his kicks this year, Fry ranks tied for second in the conference in field-goal makes (20). He's truly saved the Gamecocks' offense on more than one occasion -- especially when the collective inconsistency of the offense has led to stalled drives.

Not only has Fry been quality on the field, but he's also been stellar off of it in a charity effort near and dear to his heart.

Fry is a Type 1 diabetic -- diagnosed with the disease as a young child. Since then, he's made it a point of emphasis to work with those also afflicted. His work assisting the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation has led Fry to be named as South Carolina's representative on the SEC Community Service Team.

Credit the kicker for helping out those in a similar situation to what he endures on a daily basis.
