Colorado Football: Buffaloes earn trip to Alamo Bowl vs. Oklahoma State

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

The bowl game drought is over for the Colorado Buffaloes after nearly a decade without playing in one.

Though the school lost out on an opportunity to play in the Rose Bowl or perhaps even more with a loss to Washington on Friday, it is being reported that the Buffs have accepted an invitation to meet Oklahoma State in the Valero Alamo Bowl which takes place on December 29th from San Antonio, Texas.

It will be the first bowl appearance for Colorado since the 2007 Independence Bowl.

Though it may not be the Rose Bowl or one of the New Year’s Six games, the Alamo Bowl is nothing to sneeze at. The game has featured some of the top teams in the country in the past, including last year, when No. 11 TCU defeated No. 15 Oregon 47-41 in overtime. In fact, this will be the third year in a row that that game has featured two top-15 teams.

The Buffs were certainly hoping for a more marquee matchup, but the 31-point loss to Washington buried those thoughts. That was made clear when a Rose Bowl matchup between USC and Penn State was announced on Sunday.

Still, Colorado has a chance to finish off an 11-win campaign and start looking toward the future, when getting to bowl games was expected and being ranked in the top 25 in the nation was commonplace.

Oklahoma State finished the season at 9-3 after losing the annual ‘Bedlam’ game to Oklahoma on Saturday night. Still, they’ll provide a formidable opponent for the Buffs.

At one time, Colorado and Oklahoma State were both members of the Big 12 conference. The schools have met 46 times in their histories. However, this will be the first time they’ve played since November 2009, a 31-28 Oklahoma State victory.

Colorado’s last win over Oklahoma State came back in October 2005, when they blew the Cowboys out 34-0.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. MST and the game will be televised on ESPN. We will have much more coverage for this game right here at Glory Colorado, so make sure to check back for updates.
