Chance for South Carolina to gain confidence versus UCF
South Carolina needs a victory.
Outside of potentially Vanderbilt, it won't get any reprieve playing in the SEC. Conference play isn't traditionally the best place to work out the proverbial kinks with a true freshman quarterback and center.
With that said, a home game versus an 0-3 UCF team might be just what the doctor ordered for Steve Spurrier and his Gamecocks.
The Knights aren't a very good team. It lost to Florida International and Furman, in addition to being blown out by Stanford. While the Knights lost two games by a combined two points, those are still losses against supposed inferior competition.
Not only that, but all-league running back William Stanback was recently dismissed from the program. UCF is also without its starting quarterback Justin Holman due to a hand injury, as well as leading receiver Jordan Akins (with a knee problem). Akins is also a dynamic player on both punt and kick returns.
With all of these fortuitous events lining up for South Carolina, it has to take advantage of it.
Lorenzo Nunez should be able to get extensive time on the field. Any and all experience for a freshman signal-caller is imperative from a development standpoint. Dually, he'll theoretically be able to build a rapport with his receivers and fellow a freshman in center Zack Bailey.
Defensively, it's time for the defensive coordinator braintrust of Lorenzo Ward and Jon Hoke to ramp up the pressure. The defense, much like the offense, needs a production boost...especially in terms of creating turnovers.
