Carson-Newman's Sparks passes Kehres on career wins list
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. (AP) Carson-Newman coach Ken Sparks earned his 333rd career victory to take sole possession of sixth place on the NCAA list.
The 71-year-old Sparks leads all active college football coaches. His latest victory came Saturday, 48-45 over North Greenville.
Sparks is 333-91-2 in 36 seasons, all at Carson-Newman. He moved ahead of former Mount Union coach Larry Kehres, who stepped down in 2013 with a 332-24-3 record in 27 seasons.
John Gagliardi tops the list at 489. He is followed by Joe Paterno (409), Eddie Robinson (408), Bobby Bowden (377) and Pop Warner (336).
Paterno had ranked behind Sparks last year but returned to second place in January after the NCAA restored 111 of the late Penn State coach's victories. Those wins had been removed because of the child-molestation scandal involving former assistant Jerry Sandusky.
