Brady Hoke explains how he became Oregon's defensive coordinator

Published Jan. 19, 2016 4:47 p.m. ET

Oregon and head coach Mark Helfrich hired Brady Hoke as its new defensive coordinator over the weekend. According to Hoke, Helfrich hired the former Michigan head coach without conducting a formal interview in Eugene.

Hoke went on the SiriusXM College Football show and discussed how he wound up being offered the defensive coordinator job with his former partner at SiriusXM, Mark Packer.

Hoke, 57, has won conference Coach of the Year honors in three different leagues -- the MAC, the Mountain West and the Big Ten. Hoke went 31-20 in his four years at Michigan.

Despite Hoke's long resume, he has never been a defensive coordinator in college.
