Bradley's hot hand keys DVC victory in GGC opener

Joey Bradley threw for 398 yards and six touchdowns and the Diablo Valley College football team rolled up 603 total yards in a 45-31 win over host Chabot in the Golden Gate Conference opener for both teams.

Bradley had scoring strikes of 4, 2 and 17 yards to Diante Jackson (six catches, 93 yards) as the Vikings (5-1, 1-0 GGC) took a commanding 38-21 halftime lead and didn't look back.

Bradley hit Richard Calhoun for a 36-yard touchdown and Jackson for a 4-yard score to give the Vikings a 14-0 first quarter lead.

Chabot quarterback Travis Gardner connected with Bruce Guillory for a 4-yard touchdown and Dewayne Boston for an 8-yard touchdown to pull the Gladiators (4-2, 0-1) within 21-14.

Darnell Reed had a 80-yard scoring pass from Gardner in the second quarter and finished with five receptions for 128 yards.

Los Medanos 24, Merced 14: The Mustangs scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to beat the visiting Blue Devils in their GGC opener.

Los Medanos (3-3) trailed 14-10 with 9:52 remaining, but backup quarterback Alex Steindel launched a 20-yard touchdown pass to receiver Alex Rachal to put the Mustangs ahead. Less than four minutes later, running back Sonni Woods scored on a 3-yard dive to help seal the win.

Quarterback Juan Corral was intercepted twice in the Mustangs' first three possessions of the second half. That led Los Medanos coach Chris Shipe to replace Corral with Steindel, who completed 7 of 10 passes for 113 yards and a touchdown.

"We talked about it during halftime, and we where going to give (Steindel) a chance," Shipe said. "We made the change, and Alex played extremely well for that situation."

LMC receiver Jermaine Sims finished with six catches for 109 yards. Merced's overall record dropped to 1-5.

Contra Costa 27, Redwoods 9: Freshman quarterback Jeffery Anderson threw for 300 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Comets past the Corsairs (0-6) to their second straight victory.

Anderson completed 28 of 36 passes and connected with wide receiver Najee Lovett on two long touchdown passes of 30 and 52 yards, as Contra Costa won its Bay Valley Conference opener.

The 30-yard touchdown broke open the scoring for the Comets (3-3), who were held scoreless until late in the second quarter. Lovett finished with eight catches and 130 yards receiving.

Contra Costa's defense recorded six sacks and forced four turnovers, with two interceptions and two fumble recoveries.

Laney 31, Foothill 28: Ernie Collins kicked a 20-yard field goal with 2:24 left for a 31-21 lead and the Eagles (4-2) held on to upset the previously undefeated Owls (5-1) in the Northern California Conference opener for both teams.

Running back C.J. Anderson (34, carries, 195 yards, two touchdowns) scored on a 42-yard run with 14:14 left in the game to break a 21-21 tie and give Laney the lead for the first time since the first quarter.
