Bell's late TD pass lifts Savannah State over Howard 31-27

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) T.J. Bell's 6-yard touchdown pass to Derek Kirkland with 19 seconds to go lifted Savannah State over Howard 31-27 on Saturday.

The play completed a six-play, 49-yard drive, which started after a 38-yard punt return from Cantrell Frazier to set up a short field. Bell went 16 of 31 for 241 yards and the touchdown for Savannah State (2-4, 2-2). Arshon Spaulding Jr. rushed for 102 yards with a 53-yard touchdown and added a pair of catches for 55 yards.

Howard (1-8, 1-5) got two fourth-quarter touchdown passes from Kalen Johnson to Robert Mercer and Kyle Anthony to take a 27-24 lead with 5:17 left. Johnson went 23 of 48 for 278 yards while Anthony hauled in nine catches for 137 yards.

Howard led in yardage (406-378), time of possession by nearly 9 minutes and first downs (24-14).
