Advice from David Cutcliffe led former Duke QB Anthony Boone to Detroit
There's no clear path for former Duke quarterback Anthony Boone to make the Detroit Lions after signing with the team as an undrafted free agent. Matt Stafford is one of the NFL's top passers and both of his backups just signed new contracts.
Why would Boone choose to go to a place where he has such a high chance of being cut? Well, some advice from his college head coach David Cutcliffe led him there, according to Kyle Meinke of MLive.com.
"Coach (David Cutcliffe) told me the best thing for my situation was not to go somewhere where the quarterback situation is a challenge," Boone told MLive.com. "Like, where there's a competition. To go somewhere where I can learn from a veteran quarterback, learn from an established starter, and I develop my game as an understudy. And then one day, if I get a shot, take advantage of it."
Boone described the frustration of being a rookie quarterback and trying to learn a new offense to MLive.com, but the former Blue Devil might be going a little too hard on himself. Lions head coach Dave Caldwell is impressed with Boone's ability so far.
"He's a good player," Caldwell said, per MLive.com. "He's been productive, been at a winning program. Smart. So, we'll see what he can do."
The one degree of familiarity Boone has in Detroit is Laken Tomlinson, his teammate at Duke and the Lions' first-round pick.
