Penn State defensive end Carl Nassib is among the top 20 defensive players in the country this year, at least as far as the Maxwell Football Club is concerned.
Why does that matter? Because the MFC gives out the Chuck Bednarik Award, which goes to the best defensive player in the nation at the end of the year.
Nassib would seem to be a no-brainer for the list.
A senior who came to Happy Valley as a walk-on and is in his first season as a starter, Nassib leads the nation in sacks (14.5) and tackles for loss (18.5).
He is also third in forced fumbles with five.
His next full sack will break the school record shared by Michael Haynes (2002) and Larry Kubin (1979).
The list of semifinalists will be reduced to three November 24.
