2016 FCS vs. FBS: Northeast Conference
(STATS) - Cinderella is allowed out more often than in the month of March. During college football season, FCS programs are adept at drawing national attention as they seek upsets of the larger FBS.
Many of the games are played during the first few weekends of the season. This year, there are 113 FCS vs. FBS matchups, and the FCS hopes to exceed its nine combined wins from last season.
Northeast Conference teams, or more specifically Wagner, will be involved in two of the matchups:
The Matchups - Wagner: Boston College (Sept. 24) and Massachusetts (Oct. 29).
Glamour Game - Wagner at Boston College. These programs have never played before. While the Seahawks, who were 1-10 last season, are hopelessly overmatched, it's possible BC - which went winless in the ACC and finished 3-9 last year - will be emotionally flat after a trip to Virginia Tech the prior week.
Upset Alert - Wagner at Massachusetts. The Seahawks hope to be on track by the time they are the Homecoming Day opponent for one of UMass' two on-campus games at McGuirk Alumni Stadium. UMass is a mere 8-40 since moving from CAA Football to the FBS ranks.
Notable - Wagner began adding FBS competition in 2012 and is playing two opponents for the second consecutive season. It has a 2019 season-opening matchup scheduled at UConn … Central Connecticut State has future matchups scheduled against Syracuse (2017) and Ball State (Aug. 30) ... Duquesne appears on the verge of jumping into playing the FBS as well.
