Andre Jones scored 26 points and Winthrop played tough defense down the stretch to pull away from Jacksonville 59-45 on Thursday night.
Jacksonville (2-7) jumped out to a 4-0 advantage, but Jones hit a jumper and knocked down a 3-pointer to give Winthrop the lead for good. The Dolphins kept it close, tying the score 10-10 with 12:13 left in the first half, but Winthrop finished the period on a 17-2 run to take a 27-12 lead with 1:40 remaining.
Winthrop (3-6) shot 40 percent from the field (18 of 45) and knocked down 76 percent of their free throws (19 of 25).
The Dolphins had their worst shooting performance of the season, hitting only 32.7 percent from the field (17 of 52), 7.7 percent from 3-point range (1 of 13), and 50 percent from the free-throw line (10 of 20).
Jacksonville (2-6) has now lost five straight games.
