Wilson scores 30 as Army tops Southern Cal in OT, 85-77
LOS ANGELES (AP) Kyle Wilson's mother bought 100 tickets to accommodate family and friends who wanted to see Wilson's homecoming when Army played at USC, and the actual contingent numbered about 120.
Wilson fulfilled the local-boy-does good story. He scored 30 points and Kevin Ferguson added 14 as Army beat USC 85-77 in overtime Saturday.
Wilson, the nation's ninth-leading scorer from nearby Mission Viejo, scored 26 points after intermission as the Black Knights (7-2) got their first win against a Pac-12 team since 1964.
''It's a dream to come here and play,'' Wilson said. ''I grew up like an hour away. It was great. A bunch of friends and family were able to come. It's just great to compete against a great team like this from the Pac-12 conference.''
Wilson and Larry Toomey opened overtime with 3-pointers to complete a 19-5 run and Army never trailed in the extra session. Toomey had 12 points and Luke Morrison a career-high 11.
Army shot 37 percent in the second half but was able to erase a nine-point deficit with 5:24 left in regulation. The Black Knights shot 4-for-5 and scored 20 points in overtime, which was what coach Zach Spiker said he was waiting to see executed. Spiker downplayed the historic win, though.
''I think it just validates what we've been preaching to the guys because this is some pretty hardcore evidence of what we're capable of,'' Spiker said. ''We've had other big tests. It wasn't like this was going to be a Herculean effort. Just do what we're capable of doing (and) we knew we were going to be in the ball game.''
Jordan McLaughlin led the Trojans (6-4) with a career-high 24 points and Katin Reinhardt had 17 points as USC had a four-game winning streak snapped, their longest streak since they won eight in a row in 2009-10.
The blown lead will sit with the Trojans for a while, as will their 13 missed free throws.
''We knew everything they possibly could do,'' Reinhardt said. ''The coaches did a very good job on the scouting report. Man, we're frustrated because we definitely should have won that game. It's college basketball, so let it soak in. Let it soak and tomorrow just get back to work.''
Wilson tied it at 65-65 with a left-handed layup with 24 seconds left in regulation. The Trojans had a chance at the game winner but Nikola Jovanovic missed a jumper.
Wilson was 3-for-10 from the field and 1-for-6 from 3-point range in the first half.
''I was probably pressing a little bit, trying to do too much,'' Wilson said. ''At the end, I was able to make some shots and get back on track. I think everyone played great. Dylan (Cox) was awesome in transition. He got myself and so many other people so many shots just by pushing the ball.''
TIP-INS
Army: Wilson has scored in double figures in 13 straight games dating to last season. He tied Jamie Uptgraft for ninth on Army's all-time list and passed Bill Hannon for 21st on Army's career scoring list. Army's only other win against a Pac-12 team was against Washington State in 1964. It is 2-11.
USC: McLaughlin set a career-high in points for the second straight game. It was the fourth time this season that the Trojans faced a top-20 scorer. The others were Damion Lee of Drexel, D.J. Newbill of Penn State and Evan Payne of Loyola Marymount.
PIVOTAL MOMENT
Toomey made a 3-pointer to open overtime and Wilson followed with a 3-pointer from the corner and Army was on its way.
''He's been struggling with his shot, and it was just great to see him because he's such an unselfish player for us,'' Wilson said of Toomey.
QUOTE OF THE NIGHT
''I have no idea. That's another really cool thing,'' Wilson said when told the last time Army beat a Pac-12 team.
