Quinn McDowell scored 35 points, 20 in the second half, to lead 11th seed William & Mary to a 72-68 victory over sixth seed James Madison in the first round of the Colonial Athletic Association tournament on Friday night.

The Tribe (10-21) will play third seed Hofstra in the quarterfinals Saturday night.

An 11-4 run, capped by Devon Moore's layup, gave the Dukes (21-11) their final lead, 68-67, with 1:21 to play. Moore fouled Brandon Britt with 54 seconds left, and his two free throws put William & Mary back in the lead.

Two free throws by Matt Rum and one by McDowell provided the final margin.

James Madison outshot William & Mary in the second half 44.8 percent (13 of 29) to 39.1 percent (9 of 23), but it wasn't enough to overcome a huge disparity in free-throw opportunities. The Tribe made 16 of 23 to the Dukes' 6 of 10.

Moore scored 22 points to lead the Dukes.
