Whitney pleads guilty in robbery
A former Seton Hall basketball player has pleaded guilty in an armed robbery at a house near the school's northern New Jersey campus.
Kelly Whitney is expected to get a three-year state prison term in a plea deal with Essex County prosecutors. The 28-year-old Chicago resident pleaded guilty Monday to burglary, conspiracy and criminal restraint charges, and must serve 85 percent of his term before becoming eligible for parole.
The plea comes nearly three months after Whitney's trial ended with a deadlocked jury.
Whitney and another former Seton Hall player, Robert Mitchell, robbed several students in an off-campus apartment in March 2010. Mitchell pleaded guilty and later testified against Whitney.
The 6-foot-8 Whitney played for Seton Hall from 2002 to 2006 and finished his career with 1,448 points.
