Vermont jumps ahead early, beats Stony Brook 69-53

BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) Luke Apfeld scored 14 points and Sandro Carissimo had 13 with seven rebounds as Vermont handled Stony Brook 69-53 in a matchup of top-tier American East teams Thursday night.

The Catamounts (20-9, 14-1) shot an efficient 54.5 percent from the field and outrebounded Stony Brook 36-24. Clancy Rugg and Ethan O'Day each finished with 11 points, Candon Rusin added 10 and Brian Voelkel had seven to go with his eight assists and eight boards.

Stony Brook's (20-9, 12-3) only double-digit scorer was Carson Puriefoy with 20 points, going 5 of 11 from the floor and 3 of 6 from the perimeter.

Puriefoy hit a 3-pointer to open the scoring, but Vermont responded with a 14-0 run. They hit all six of their 3-pointers in the opening 15 minutes, moving out to a 30-12 lead at the 5:35 mark.

The Seawolves couldn't pull closer than 14 in the second half.
