Chase Plummer scored a career-high 23 points and Brian Neller hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with 32 seconds left as Maryland-Baltimore County defeated New Hampshire 82-76 Monday night in the America East Conference opener for both teams.
The 82 points scored is a season high for the Retrievers (2-11), who hit 8 of 12 from beyond the arc. The win is also UMBC's first in a league opener since 2008.
Neller, who finished with 17 points on 5-of-8 shooting from long range, hit a trey with 4:01 remaining to give the Retrievers a 71-64 lead.
The Wildcats (5-7) then hit eight consecutive free throws in a 10-2 run, capped by Jordon Bronner's pair with 46 seconds remaining that put New Hampshire ahead 74-73.
After Neller's final 3-pointer, UMBC hit 6 of 6 free throws - four by Ryan Cook, then two by Neller.
Patrick Konan led the Wildcats with 20 points.
