UAB cruises in second half with 70-53 win over FIU

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) Robert Brown and Chris Cokley scored 12 points apiece to rally Alabama-Birmingham to a 70-53 win over Florida International on Saturday.

Trailing by three at the break, UAB (7-9, 3-0 Conference USA) opened the second half with a 10-2 run that included 3-pointers from Nick Norton and Brown to take a 38-33 lead with 15:33 to go. The Blazers broke it open a few minutes later with a 12-0 burst capped by a pair of free throws from Denzell Watts to make it 54-39 and the margin remained at double figures the rest of the way.

Norton finished with 11 points for UAB, which shot 43 percent from the floor on 53 attempts to extend its win streak to four.

Dennis Mavin led FIU (8-8, 1-2) with 12 points, six rebounds and four assists. The Golden Panthers were held to just 22 points in the second half.
