Texas Women's Star Gets National Award Recognition
Texas Women’s Basketball freshman sensation Joyner Holmes has received national recognition.
Joyner Holmes was named espnW’s National Player of the Week on Monday. ESPN based the award on Holmes’ excellent performance in Texas’ upset victory over #2-ranked Baylor and domination in the follow-up game Saturday afternoon against Kansas.
ESPN also wrote that Holmes’ emergence has offered a glimpse into the future of college women’s basketball.
Holmes has helped guide the Texas Longhorns to an 18-game winning streak and 14-0 start in the Big 12. She is a double-double machine and helped the Longhorns outrebound the Baylor Bears for the first time all season last Monday.

Also on Monday, Joyner Holmes and the Texas Longhorns entered the Top 10 in the AP Poll Rankings at #8.
There was a lid on the Top 10 throughout Texas’ amazing winning streak. But, beating Baylor in Waco finally helped the Horns get into the Top 10.
There is a lid on the Top 5, though, since Texas’ four losses this season have been against other Top 10 teams.
Texas (20-4) lost to #1-ranked Connecticut, #3 Mississippi State, #6 South Carolina, and #10 Stanford during the first half of the season. Then, Texas beat Baylor, which dipped to #4 in a tie with Florida State in the latest poll.
Now, Texas faces the #4-ranked Seminoles on Monday night. It’s a big out-of-conference test for the Lady Longhorns as they look to take down another Top 5 team.
The game will air on ESPN2 as part of a double-header of Top 10 women’s basketball games. FSU vs. Texas is followed by #1 UConn vs. South Carolina. UConn is looking to win their 100th straight game and maintain their perfect record.
