Melvin Johnson III scored 23 points and made seven 3-pointers to lead UTSA to a 91-50 victory against Nicholls State on Wednesday night in the Southland Conference opener for both teams.

Five players scored in double figures for the Roadrunners (8-6, 1-0), with Jeromie Hill adding 16 points, Sei Paye and Kannon Burrage 11 each and Stephen Franklin 10.

Bryan Hammond and Trevon Lewis had 13 points each for the Colonels (4-9, 0-1), who shot just 33.3 percent (19 of 57) from the floor. Lewis collected 13 rebounds.

A 13-0 run over a 4:32 stretch late in the first half helped UTSA take a 35-23 lead at the break. The Roadrunners poured it on in the second half, as Johnson hit six of his 3-pointers to help open a 48-point cushion.
