Texas A&M Basketball: Deshawn Corprew ruled non-qualifier by NCAA
Billy Kennedy and Texas A&M basketball are now left with a three man 2016 recruiting class.
As Texas A&M looks to earn a second place finish in the SEC in 2016-17, the Aggies are losing a potential key member of their bench and a critical part of their future.
The 91st best player in the class of 2016 (according to ESPN), Deshawn Corprew, has been ruled a non-qualifier by the NCAA. The 6’5″, 190 pound four-star small forward will not be eligible for this upcoming season.
The Aggies now have a three man recruiting class in 2016, with four-star power forward Robert Williams, four-star point guard J.J. Caldwell and power forward Eric Vila making up the unit.
On the surface, this may not seem like a huge deal (other than the fact that Corprew can provide depth). But this is a prospect that received offers from Kansas, Louisville, Texas and North Carolina State, amongst others. He could’ve not only provided valuable insurance for D.J. Hogg on the wing this season, but he could’ve been a key piece to the program for years to come.
Despite being a bit undersized for the three-position, Corprew is physical and tough on both ends of the floor. He is an excellent player in transition and plays in full attack-mode in the half court. He utilizes his athleticism successfully and his high motor and energy in the proper fashion.
Where Corprew really could’ve made an impact in year one was on the defensive end of the floor. He’s still working on his outside shot and mid-range game, but because of his strength, he could’ve bodied up opposing perimeter talents.
The Aggies are still in good shape with their three-man class. While they lose multiple key pieces off last year’s second round NCAA Tournament team, they return Hogg, Admon Gilder, Tonny Trocha-Morelos, Tyler Davis and Tavario Miller.
Regardless of the ruling, A&M is set to challenge Florida and others for the second spot in the SEC.
