Syracuse Basketball: Will Jim Boeheim stay beyond 2018?

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

This has been a hot topic among the Syracuse basketball faithful over the last several years. But one ESPN reporter thinks Jim Boeheim will stay longer than originally agreed upon.

We all know the back story of Syracuse basketball head coach Jim Boeheim’s promise back in 2015. The Syracuse basketball program was under heavy scrutiny through a NCAA investigation. So the Orange did the only reasonable thing they could do, punish themselves.

It appears the strategy worked for the most part as the sanctions were minimized. Especially considering that Boeheim announced he’d be leaving the game. But now things have quieted down on the NCAA front and it re-opens the door for Boeheim to stay beyond 2018.

But lets be honest, why would he leave now? ESPN Senior Reporter Andy Katz gave his annual preseason primer on the hottest topics in college basketball. Of course included was none other than Boeheim.

Chatter about Jim Boeheim coaching at Syracuse beyond 2018 will be hot
Boeheim announced in 2015 that he would retire after the 2017-18 season. Yet he has another team that could reach the Final Four. His recruiting is going exceedingly well. He’s healthy. And he now has a close friend as a boss in John Wildhack, the former ESPN executive and new Syracuse athletic director. It’s hard not to see Boeheim continuing if the Orange continue to excel.

That looks like it’ll continue this season with the Orange. They should excel as they return three key players from their Final Four run last season. On top of that they received a huge boost when they added graduate transfer Andrew White from Nebraska.

While the star of the team could very well be Tyler Lydon who should be considered a break out star in his sophomore campaign after having a solid freshman season. Plus Boeheim will be coaching a full season, after serving the suspension last year.

So with all that being said, Boeheim is under no pressure to actually fulfill his words and walk away. While anytime he has been asked about the subject he has had the opportunity to squash the possibility of him returning and he’s chosen not too. Make of it what you will, but Boeheim will coach as long as he wants to coach and no one will stop him.
