Hal Bateman buried a 3-point shot with five-tenths of a second remaining to give Stephen F. Austin a 66-65 victory against Texas State on Wednesday night in the Southland Conference opener for both teams.

It was the only field goal of the night for Bateman, who scored 10 points. He made two free throws to give the Lumberjacks (7-7, 1-0) a 63-62 lead with 38 seconds left.

With five seconds remaining, Travis Jones hit a jumper, was fouled and made the free throw to give the Bobcats (7-7, 0-1) a two-point cushion. Bateman took the inbounds pass, dribbled three times to the left wing and he hit the shot that ended Texas State's 16-game home winning streak.

Taylor Smith led the Lumberjacks with 19 points and seven rebounds.
