CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) St. John's would likely earn a rematch with Duke if the Red Storm can get past San Diego State in their NCAA Tournament opener.

San Diego State (26-8) earned the No. 8 seed in the South Region and will begin tournament play Friday in Charlotte against the ninth-seeded Red Storm (21-11).

A win by St. John's would almost certainly set up another matchup with the top-seeded Blue Devils. The Red Storm blew a double-digit lead in the second half in January and lost to them, giving Mike Krzyzewski his 1,000th career win.

The Red Storm flamed out of the Big East tournament early when Providence routed them 74-57 in the quarterfinals.
