Saint Mary's beats Cal State-LA 77-67

MORAGA, Calif. (AP) Kerry Carter scored a career-high 25 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for his first career double-double to lead Saint Mary's to a 77-67 victory over Division-II Cal State-Los Angeles in the season opener for both teams on Friday night.

Cal State-LA had a 34-31 halftime lead. Carter hit a 3-pointer, sparking a 16-2 run to open the second half and the Gaels led the rest of the way. Carter also made a career-best seven 3-pointers.

Brad Waldow added 16 points with 10 boards, and Emmett Naar scored 12 with five assists in his first career start for St. Mary's. Aaron Bright chipped in 10 points and Desmond Simmons pulled in 11 rebounds for the Gaels.

Joshua Munzon scored 18 points and three other Cal State-LA players reached double figures. Dustin Watts had 10 rebounds for the Golden Eagles.
