S. Utah 66, CS Bakersfield 58

Jordan Weirick and Ramell Taylor, making their first starts of the season, combined for 33 points Wednesday as Southern Utah defeated Cal State Bakersfield 66-58.

Weirick had 17 points and Taylor 16 for the Thunderbirds (1-1), who used a 9-0 run late in the game to take control. With the score tied 49-49 with 4:51 remaining, Taylor hit a jump shot, Weirick added a layup and a 3-pointer, and Matt Hodgson capped the rally with a layup at the 2:12 mark.

Stephon Carter had 24 points for Bakersfield (1-2). Rashad Savage added 10 points and 15 rebounds.

Both teams had trouble shooting the ball. Southern Utah was 24 for 63 (38.1 percent) from the field and 1 for 5 from 3-point range, but did convert 17 of 21 free-throw attempts. Bakersfield was 19 of 53 (35.8 percent) from the field, 6 of 21 from 3-point range and 14 of 25 from the line.
