Reports: Howland withdraws from consideration for Oregon State job
Former UCLA head coach Ben Howland has withdrawn from consideration for the head-coaching job at Oregon State, according to multiple reports.
A source told CBS Sports that Howland didn't think it was the "right fit" and that he likely will not coach during the 2014-15 season. ESPN reports Howland spoke with Oregon State athletic director Bob De Carolis on Monday to inform him of his decision.
Both reports list Arizona assistant Damon Stoudamire, a Portland native, as the front-runner for the position at Oregon State.
Howland coached the Bruins from the 2003-04 season through the 2012-13 season, after which he was fired. UCLA made three consecutive Final Four appearances between 2005-06 and 2007-08. Howland also has coached at Northern Arizona and Pittsburgh.
On May 5, Oregon State fired Craig Robinson after he led the team to a 16-16 record this past season. Robinson, the brother of Michelle Obama, went 94-105 in six seasons with the Beavers.
