The news was first reported by ESPN college basketball insider Jeff Goodman.

"Ben Howland has reached a verbal agreement to become the Mississippi State coach, sources told ESPN," Goodman wrote on Twitter Monday morning. "He is en route to Starkville now. That’s a pretty nice hire for MSU, which has struggled to compete in the SEC in recent seasons."

Howland, 57, brings a strong resume to Starkville. The former Bruins coach led UCLA to three straight Final Fours from 2006-08. The Bulldogs haven’t made the NCAA Tournament since 2009.
