Report: Larry Brown interested in SMU
Hall of Fame coach Larry Brown has expressed interest in the basketball coaching vacancy at Southern Methodist University (SMU), The Dallas Morning News reported Wednesday.
It is unknown whether officials at SMU are looking into hiring the 71-year-old, who last coached in the NBA with the Charlotte Bobcats in 2010.
Brown told the paper he has not spoken to the school directly, but would "absolutely" be open to discussing the job.
Brown, who won an NBA title with the Pistons in 2004, has not coached in college since leading Kansas to a national title in 1988. He remains the only coach to win an NBA title and a national championship.
He reportedly was close to becoming the head coach at Stanford in 2008 but changed his mind.
Brown said he is looking to return to the bench whether it is in the NBA or at a college.
"I just want to be a resource in some way, or coach or be involved, whether it's as an assistant, or head coach, or if they want me to mentor somebody."
SMU is looking for a new coach after firing Matt Doherty, who failed to reach the NCAA Tournament in six seasons.
The program's next coach will join SMU as it embarks on a $40 million renovation of its basketball arena in the summer. The school is set to join the Big East in all sports starting in 2013.
Marquette's Buzz Williams, a Texas native, was approached about the opening but was not interested.
