Portland beats BYU 84-81 on heels of Cougars' win at Gonzaga
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) Alec Wintering scored 22 points, including two free throws with 16 seconds left, and Portland beat BYU 84-81 on Saturday, two nights after the Cougars won at No. 25 Gonzaga for the second straight season.
Jarrel Marshall's dunk gave Portland a 73-70 lead and he added two free throws one minute later for a five-point advantage.
D'Marques Tyson sank a deep 3-pointer for an 80-74 lead but Nate Austin answered with a putback. After Portland went 1 of 2 from the line, Nick Emery grabbed a loose ball in the lane, dribbled back to the corner and hit a 3-pointer to cut BYU's deficit to 81-79. Wintering sealed it at the line.
Bryce Pressley and D'Marques Tyson added 21 points apiece for Portland (9-11, 3-4 West Coast), which improved to 2-12 in the all-time series with BYU.
Chase Fischer scored 22 points, his 11th 20-plus game this season, for BYU (13-6, 4-2). Emery added 13 points and set the BYU freshman record with 45 3-pointers.
