McGill scores 23, Florida International tops Ave Maria 89-72

MIAMI (AP) Donte McGill scored 23 points, Elmo Stephen had 20 and seven rebounds, and Florida International beat NAIA's Ave Maria 89-72 on Wednesday night to snap a four-game losing streak.

McGill, who entered averaging 17 points, scored 20-plus for the 14th time in his career. He was 9 of 15 from the field and Stephen only missed five of his 13 attempts.

Richard Bivens added a career-high 13 points - 11 in the first half - for FIU (2-4), which lost three straight - by a combined total of 13 points - at the Red Diamond Roundball Classic in Mobile, Alabama. The Golden Panthers hit 12 of 23 3-pointers, led by Stephen's four.

It was tied 32-all at halftime and remained close until Stephen scored five straight points to start a 14-5 run, capped by his 3-pointer for a 66-50 lead.

Deonte Dixon made five 3-pointers and scored 19 points for Ave Maria. Romello Bates had 18 points, eight rebounds and eight assists.
