Hill-Mais, Newman lead Oakland past Kalamazoo, 99-45
ROCHESTER, Mich. (AP) — Xavier Hill-Mais and Karmari Newman each knocked down three 3-pointers and Oakland opened the season with a 99-45 rout of Division III Kalamazoo in an exhibition game Tuesday night.
The Golden Grizzlies got out to a fast start, racing to a 54-17 lead after 20 minutes and cruised to the finish.
Hill-Mais and Newman, both redshirts a year ago, got off to a fast start. Hill-Mais missed a 3-pointer, then converted a layup before hitting a second 3 to put the team up 9-2 two minutes into the season. Brad Brechting's layup with 16:30 left in the half pushed the Oakland lead into double digits to stay.
Hill-Mais hit 3 of 6 from distance and was 5 of 9 overall from the field to score 17 points and lead Oakland. Newman was also 3 of 6 from beyond the arc and hit 6 of 11 from the floor to tally 16 points.
Kalamazoo led the series coming into the game, winning two of the first three meetings.
