Haws scores 28, BYU holds off San Francisco 78-74
PROVO, Utah (AP) Tyler Haws had 28 points on Thursday night, and Brigham Young survived an off-night shooting to beat San Francisco 78-74.
The nation's leading offense was just 3 of 20 from 3-point range and 40 percent overall, but BYU (16-7, 6-4 West Coast Conference) never trailed in the second half. Anson Winder gave the Cougars a two-possession lead at 74-70 with 37 seconds left and iced it with a pair of free throws with two seconds left. Winder finished with 11 points.
San Francisco (9-13, 3-7) tied it early in the second half at 38-all and BYU answered with a 7-0 run. The Dons closed the margin back within one point four times, the last at 71-70 with 2:07 left.
Haws finished the game with 2,465 career points, two behind Danny Ainge for second on BYU's all-time scoring list.
Mark Tollefsen led USF with 22 points on 10-of-14 shooting.
