GW names Joseph interim coach, replacing fired Lonergan

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 4:41 p.m. ET

WASHINGTON (AP) George Washington has named Maurice Joseph its interim head coach, replacing the fired Jim Lonergan.

The school announced the appointment Tuesday.

Joseph had been an assistant on Lonergan's staff for the past five seasons. Lonergan was fired Sept. 17 after an internal investigation found that he ''engaged in conduct inconsistent with the university's values.''

Players made allegations about Lonergan's behavior and conduct that prompted the investigation.

Joseph, a 31-year-old from Montreal, played at Michigan State under Mike Izzo before transferring to Vermont. The school says Joseph played a key role in the development of perimeter players like Patricio Garino.

GW won the NIT last season.
