Duke hires Nolan Smith to staff as special assistant
DURHAM, N.C. (AP) Duke has added former ACC player of the year Nolan Smith to its coaching staff.
Coach Mike Krzyzewski on Monday announced Smith's hiring as a special assistant.
Smith and current assistant Jon Scheyer were the starting guards on Duke's 2010 national championship team. The following year, Smith won the league's player of the year award.
Krzyzewski says Smith is ''a true champion and a consummate example'' of the type of player Duke wants. Smith says the transition ''has been natural for me.''
As a special assistant, Smith will assist in developing game strategies, analyzing film, planning practices and taking part in staff meetings. Scheyer held the same position for one season, then was promoted in 2014 when Steve Wojciechowski left for Marquette.
