The College of Charleston named Doug Wojcik as its new basketball head coach Saturday night.

Wojcik, who was fired as Tulsa coach after a 17-14 season, replaces the retiring Bobby Cremins.

"We had strong candidates, and a difficult choice to make," said Charleston president George Benson. "But Doug Wojcik stood out. Doug has had success at every level throughout his career, as a player, an assistant and a head coach.

"More importantly, as a head coach, he has run a clean program, and has done so over many years at a university with an excellent academic reputation.

"Doug has been strongly recommended to us by some of the most successful coaches in college basketball."

Wojcik had a winning record in all but the first of his seven seasons at Tulsa, finishing with a 140-92 record.

He led the Golden Hurricane to three postseason appearances, but none in the NCAA tournament.

Cremins spent six seasons as Charleston coach, taking the team to three postseason appearances, but the team did not make the NCAA tournament under him.
