California men's basketball coach Mike Montgomery is being discharged from the hospital after undergoing surgery Wednesday that will keep him away from the team for a short recovery period.

Cal said the procedure went as doctors expected and that Montgomery was surrounded by family, in good spirits and had his usual sense of humor following the operation. The school provided no further details about the coach's condition and asked for privacy on the matter.

Assistant coaches Travis DeCuire and Jay John are running the team until Montgomery returns.

Montgomery enters his fourth season with the Golden Bears, who in his first year won 22 games and placed third in the Pac-10 - five spots higher than they were picked to finish. Cal shared the conference title in his second season, the first for the program in 50 years.
