BYU guard Nick Emery suspended 1 game for punching opponent
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) BYU guard Nick Emery is suspended from the team's next game following NCAA rules and he received a reprimand from the West Coast Conference on Thursday.
The Cougars face Weber State on Saturday.
Emery was given a Flagrant 2 foul and ejected from Wednesday's game against Utah for punching Brandon Taylor near the end of the game. The ejection carries an automatic one-game suspension.
The freshman apologized to Taylor in a statement and added, ''I got caught up in the intensity of the game and let my emotions get the best of me.'' He also apologized to Utah, coach Larry Krystkowiak, his teammates and fans of both schools and promised to ''do better in representing myself, the team and BYU.''
West Coast Conference commissioner Lynn Holzman released a statement condemning the act and called it ''unacceptable.''
BYU coach Dave Rose did not comment Thursday. There is no additional discipline from the school.
