Bacon scores 23 as Florida State wins opener

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) Dwayne Bacon scored 23 points and grabbed nine rebounds as Florida State opened the season with an 88-67 victory over Charleston Southern on Saturday.

The 6-foot-7 sophomore guard, who led the Seminoles in scoring and rebounding last season, was 7 of 14 from the field, including 4 of 6 on 3-pointers. During preseason practices Bacon said a major point of emphasis for him during the offseason was working on refining his jump shot.

Xavier Rathan-Mayes scored 12 points and freshman Jonathan Isaac added 10 as FSU improved to 14-1 in openers under coach Leonard Hamilton.

Freshman guard Christian Keeling led Charleston Southern with 16 points while Cortez Mitchell added 14 and Jamar Martin 12.

The Buccaneers were up 17-12 early in the first half on a Cortez Mitchell 3-pointer before the Seminoles took control with a 20-5 run. FSU's largest lead was by 22 with under a minute remaining.

Florida State shot 33 of 67 from the field and had a 42-30 rebounding edge. Charleston Southern struggled from the perimeter as it was just 7 of 25 on 3-pointers.
