After 10 months as a college assistant coach, Jason Capel has been tabbed as the new coach at Appalachian State.

Sources have told FOXSports.com that Capel, who was hired in June by Buzz Peterson as an assistant, was chosen over fellow assistant Matt McMahon, who has spent 10 years as an assistant at the school and also played there.

Capel, the younger brother of Oklahoma coach Jeff Capel and the son of Charlotte Bobcats assistant Jeff Capel Jr., played at North Carolina and spent four seasons playing overseas.

Capel replaces Peterson, who left last week to become the head coach at UNC-Wilmington.
