Appalachian State holds off Hampton in 82-74 win

BOONE, N.C. (AP) Frank Eaves scored a career-high 25 points, Chris Burgess added a career-high 20 and Appalachian State edged Hampton 82-74 on Monday night in the first-ever meeting between the programs.

Appalachian State (2-2) opened with a 13-2 burst fueled by Eaves and Burgess and capped with a Jacob Lawson dunk. The Mountaineers took a 43-36 advantage into the break and held off Hampton (1-4) in the second half.

Griffin Kinney added 13 points, also a career high, and six rebounds for Appalachian State, which shot 44.2 percent from the floor but was 31 of 38 from the free throw line in its season home opener.

Hampton was led by Brian Darden, who scored 20 before fouling out. Deron Powers added 13 points and dished out five assists, Quinton Chievous had 11 plus seven rebounds.
