Shimoda claims super-bantamweight title
Japanese challenger Akifumi Shimoda won the WBA super-bantamweight title Monday by beating Ryol Li Lee of Japan in a unanimous decision.
Shimoda sent Lee to the canvas three times during the 12-round bout at Ariake Colosseum. The scores were 115-111, 118-109, 118-109 in favor of Shimoda.
The 26-year-old Shimoda improved to 23-2 (10 KOs) with one draw while Lee dropped to 17-2 (8 KOs) with one draw.
Lee, who is also 26, was making his first defense of the title he took from Thai champion Poonsawat Kratingdaenggym in October.
Takashi Uchiyama of Japan stopped compatriot Takashi Miura with a technical knockout to retain his WBA super-featherweight title for the third time.
The ringside doctor halted the fight after the eighth round because of a cut to the challenger's right eye.
The 31-year-old Uchiyama improved to 17-0 (14 KOs). Miura, 26, dropped to 20-2 (16 KOs) with two draws.
