Mexican govt. fines Marquez for logo use
Late Wednesday, in a meeting of Mexico’s Electoral Commission, it was unanimously decided to fine Juan Manuel Marquez 29,000 pesos ($2,260 US dollars) for his use of the PRI (Institutional Revolutionary Party) logo on his trunks in his Nov. 12 bout against Manny Pacquiao.
According to Mexican law, it’s prohibited to publicly campaign for a specific candidate or political party within a week of the elections. In Marquez’s case, he wore the red, white, and green emblem of the PRI the day before the Nov. 13 elections in the state of Michoacan.
In response to the violation, the mayoral elections for Morelia, Michaoacan’s capital city, had to be annulled after opposing parties protested Marquez’s use of the trunks in the bout viewed by an estimated 40 million Mexicans.
