Guerrero: Mayweather would be 'deadlier' in MMA
Former IBF Featherweight Champion Robert Guerrero believes the smaller MMA gloves would make Floyd Mayweather even ‘deadlier’ in a fight against UFC superstar Conor McGregor.
Ever since Conor McGregor first called out Floyd Mayweather, the debate of boxing vs MMA has raged through each devoted fanbase. Truthfully, it is a tiring question. They are two separate entities with their own complex systems. Anyone with sense accepts that most of the time boxers will lose in an MMA fight, and vice-versa.
Besides the freak exceptions, this can be comfortably concluded. However, something about this hypothetical fight brings out a mass of conflicted opinion.
Boxer and former WBC interim welterweight champion Robert Guerrero has added his thoughts to the debate. Speaking about Mayweather’s chances in an MMA fight, Guerrero believes the smaller gloves could bode well for the undefeated superstar.
“The smaller gloves might even make Floyd more deadly and quick.” He then added “McGregor is nowhere near Floyd’s speed, so put him in some small gloves and it’s going to be beyond.”
Floyd Mayweather almost certainly has faster hands and evasiveness skills. But this statement excludes all the other variables involved in MMA. Though, in fairness to Guerrero, he was speaking about a fight which didn’t include knees and elbows – so not really an MMA fight.
The surreal clash of titans has been teased by both men for a while. Mayweather JR. said the “intriguing” fight would bring him out of retirement. And most recently, McGregor called Mayweather out again at the UFC 205 press conference.
If this ever goes beyond a marketing gimmick, where would the two men meet? Mayweather is unwilling to fight in an MMA format, whilst McGregor is willing to swap the cage for the ring. With that in mind, a boxing match seems like the only option.
